Yes, this is unwanted behavior.
Anyway I have created a temporary solution which resolves the issue.
Just add the following CSS snippet:

.smart-tabs[vertical] .smart-tabs-content-section,
.smart-tabs[vertical] .smart-tabs-header-items{
    height: auto;
}
