Conformance statement
ISO 10816-3 Vibration Zones
Scope
ISO 10816-3 gives evaluation zones for the mechanical vibration of industrial machines measured on non-rotating parts, as RMS velocity in mm/s. It is referenced by the asset health page template, which classifies machines into zones A to D and colours a fleet list, a gauge and a trend from them, and by the vibration analysis screen, which shows the zone of the measured velocity for a Group 1 machine on rigid support (2.3 / 4.5 / 7.1 mm/s).
No component implements ISO 10816-3. The standard is used as data: a zone table that the template reads. This is the correct place for it, because the zone boundaries depend on the machine and its mounting rather than on the software.
The vibration-gauge preset of Smart.Industrial.apply() is not an implementation either. It draws its advisory, warning and critical bands at 28, 45 and 70 % of its 0–25 mm/s scale (7, 11.25 and 17.5 mm/s), which are not the zone boundaries of any column of ISO 10816-3. For the zones of a machine, give the gauge ranges from the table below, or from the column that fits the machine.
The zone table and the machine class
The template is configured for Group 2 machines (15–300 kW) on rigid support:
| Zone | Boundary (mm/s RMS) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| A | 0 – 1.4 | Newly commissioned |
| B | 1.4 – 2.8 | Unrestricted long-term operation |
| C | 2.8 – 4.5 | Unsatisfactory for long-term operation |
| D | above 4.5 | Damage occurring |
These boundaries apply to one support class and must not be mixed. The same Group 2 machines on flexible support use 2.3 / 4.5 / 7.1, and Group 1 machines (300 kW and above) have their own columns. A value taken from the wrong column produces a table that looks reasonable and classifies machines into the wrong zone.
An earlier version of this template had this error, and it has been corrected. The template declared rigid mounting but used 7.1 as its C/D boundary, which is a flexible-support value. A machine reading 5 mm/s RMS was shown in zone C ("unsatisfactory for long-term operation") when ISO 10816-3 places it in zone D ("damage occurring"). The boundary is now 4.5.
The correction is documented here because it is the kind of error this documentation is meant to catch: the template did not invent its thresholds, it mixed two correct columns, which is harder to notice and equally wrong.
The asset detail screen had the same kind of error, and it has been corrected too. It describes a 55 kW pump on a rigid foundation (Group 2, rigid), but classified its vibration with 4.5 and 7.1 mm/s, drew the vibration-gauge preset's bands, and listed an alarm limit of 11.2 mm/s and a trip limit of 17.5 mm/s with ISO 10816-3 as their source, although the standard defines zones and not alarm or trip limits. It now classifies with 2.8 (zone C, shown as elevated) and 4.5 mm/s (zone D, shown as high), draws the gauge bands at the same boundaries on a 0–10 mm/s scale, lists the zone boundaries with the standard, group and support class as their source, and gives its alarm (4.5 mm/s) and trip (7.1 mm/s) limits as site settings.
Configuring the table for your machines
The zone table is a single array in demos/page-templates/asset-health/data.js, used by everything that displays a zone: the gauge bands, the fleet column, the trend annotations and the legend. A site with a different machine group or support class edits this one place.
Check the machine class before copying the template. The group and the support class are properties of the machine and its foundation, not defaults to inherit.
Known limitations
- Zone classification only. The template classifies a supplied RMS velocity. It does not measure, integrate, filter or acquire; the reading comes from the condition monitoring system.
- Only Part 3 of ISO 10816. Reciprocating machines, hydraulic sets and wind turbines are covered by other parts and other standards, none of which is represented.
- The diagnostics in the template are illustrative. The order markers (1× unbalance, 2× misalignment, 3× looseness, BPFO outer race) demonstrate the spectrum presentation. They are not a diagnostic engine and are not part of ISO 10816-3.
- The Group 1 and flexible-support tables are not included as selectable presets. The template is configured with the table above; the vibration analysis screen hard-codes the Group 1 rigid boundaries.
